The relationships we create in our careers are like bridges: every single one is important, even if you don’t know it right now, and it’s worth building them as solidly as you can.
You cannot predict the future. You know that, of course. But what that means is you also cannot predict what a given interpersonal relationship is going to do in the future. You just don’t know. Maybe you’re a coworker with someone today; maybe in the future, they’re in a position to help you get the new job you desperately need, or make an introduction that will open up an opportunity for you.
That’s why it’s so important to always be thinking about the impression you’re making on someone. Even if someone irks you (maybe through some personal tic or personality trait), do your best to stay positive and leave a good impression, because you never know when that relationship may pay off.
Plus, I mean, it just makes life less stressful!
