As previously announced, I’m putting together an online virtual “Career Fest” and it’s starting to really shape up. Here are the details:
It’ll be the week of 4-October-2021. Registration will be free to paid Ampere Club members, $50 to everyone else. That’s mainly to ensure I can cover the platform and hosting costs. If it breaks even, I’ll be relieved and not get in trouble with @PSHDonsBoss. If it makes a profit, we’re planning to enrich a charity that helps people from disadvantaged background find their way into a tech career.
I’m calling it AmpNavigator™. There’ll be a separate companion event in 2022 called AmpLeadership™ for people interested in budding leadership skills (and remember, “leadership ain’t just for bosses!”). The idea is to help you navigate your career so that it steers you to the success you define for yourself.
Sessions will be prerecorded – this enables you to watch them at your leisure during the event dates. Ampere Club subscribers will have on-demand access through end of year, everyone else will need to watch during the event itself. This is mainly a function of the platform costs; I’m planning to pay just for the month of the event and the month prior, after which the hosting will be taken down. In reality, I may be able to leave it up for everyone for the month of October, and if so, I will, but I want to set a reasonable expectation up front.
There’s a great roster of folks proposing some really ingenious sessions (and you’re welcome to jump in — every experience is worth sharing! Use the “HMU” link to suggest something). You’re gonna see content around building your business acumen, developing career skills, working on soft skills, and a lot more. There’ll be at least a handful of career case studies from a wide variety of people, too! You’re also going to find some “Navigation” sessions from major recruiting firms, outlining where they see the big demand in the career marketplace—giving you something to point yourself toward, whether you’re looking for a job or not.
Many of the presenters have also offered to do live follow-up Q&A after their sessions, which should be fun-fun-fun. And, there’ll be built-in networking and chat, so you can connect with other attendees. The idea is to make this an annual event where we can all come together to share our career stories, help each other better navigate our careers, and help us all achieve the success we want for ourselves.
Right now, I’m planning a 2-day event, meaning it’ll be ~10 hours of content or so. However, if more people propose more content… then I’ll expand it. I’m also planning to have at least a couple of “happy hour” live-stream events where people can interact, break out into their own chat groups, and so on. But this’ll all be a little play-it-by-ear, and the more suggestions (and session proposals) you bring to the table, the more it’ll take shape that way!
So here’s how to keep in the loop: Watch this blog (DonJones.com), or subscribe at Ampere Club (the free option is fine, you’ll get all the notifications, although paid membership is $50/year until the end of June and that’ll get you event admission free). I’m hoping to open registration in July sometime, although it might push to August (if you’re a paid Ampere Club member, you’ll get your free admission link in September, and you’ll have guaranteed space).
I’m getting really excited to be able to facilitate this! I’m hoping a lot of people find this to be a worthwhile and affordable way of focusing their careers, ending the “rat race,” and sliding into the driver’s seat of their career. I know there’s a ton of awesome content already proposed—working in multigenerational workplaces, finding the work/family balance, creating a workplace where people feel they belong, managing a major career switch, understanding business finances, and tons more are already on the table.
I hope you’ll consider joining in!
